Mage-OS 3.0 Released

Mage-OS 3.0 officially launched in May and represents the largest release in project history, built on Magento Open Source 2.4.9.

Highlights include:

  • Brand-new interactive installer (bin/magento install)
  • Built-in Return Merchandise Authorization (RMA)
  • Admin Activity Log
  • PHP 8.5 support
  • Improved PHP 8.4 performance through lazy object loading
  • New Minimal Distribution for lightweight installations
  • Bundled developer tooling including n98-magerun2 and Ignition
  • Optimized Varnish support
  • Customizable admin branding

Community feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with many users reporting smooth upgrades and installations. The new interactive installer and Minimal Distribution have generated particular interest among developers and agencies.

Community & Technical Highlights

Security First

In May, the team reacted quickly to a GitHub Actions and Composer security issue affecting parts of the wider PHP ecosystem. Temporary safeguards were implemented across Mage-OS repositories while Composer released fixes, demonstrating the project’s commitment to security and responsible release management.

CI and Testing Improvements

Significant work continues on modernizing Mage-OS CI pipelines:

  • New E2E testing capabilities
  • Improved GitHub Actions workflows
  • Faster dependency caching
  • New smoke-testing functionality for stores
  • Ongoing Playwright integration efforts

These improvements will help contributors and extension developers deliver higher quality code faster.

Looking Ahead: Mage-OS 4

Initial discussions have already begun around the October 2026 release cycle. Several community members are exploring AI-focused features and new Mage-OS Lab projects that could become part of the next major release. The project remains open to ideas, contributors, and experimentation.

Get Involved

Mage-OS continues to grow because of its contributors, members, sponsors, and community volunteers.

Whether you contribute code, documentation, testing, design, translations, or simply provide feedback, your participation helps move the project forward.

If you want a direct voice in the future of Mage-OS, join the Association before the General Assembly and make sure your vote counts on June 17.

We look forward to seeing you there.
